Madison area native Emma Downing has been playing cello for nearly 15 years, and has been involved with the Madison music scene nearly all of her life. After studying with Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras for 6 years, Emma taught at WYSO for two years. Emma has been teaching independently since the fall of 2009 and has continued developing her studio since completing her BM in Cello Performance at UW Madison under the instruction of Uri Vardi. She has had the opportunities to study with accomplished cellists such as Dr. Lawrence Leviton, Amy Frost, and Marta Simidtchieva. Emma was also chosen to participate in Master Classes instructed by Matt Haimovitz and Mark Kosower. As a teacher, Emma believes in prioritizing bodily and mental awareness during musical study. In her spare time, Emma takes any opportunity to enjoy the company of dogs, practice yoga, and perfect her latte art.
